Language Arts Instruction
Shared Reading --Socratic Seminar featuring Junior Great Books.
Guided Reading --Literature studies, Novels, Poetry, Drama, and Non-fiction studies correlated with DVUSD and common core standards.
Independent Reading --Self-selected and/or Student-led book
clubs assessed through a reading response journal and discussions.
Word-Study -- Differentiated according to student spelling
and vocabulary development. After Derivational Stage: advanced vocabulary
development including morphemic analysis; resources include Words Their
Way, Wordly Wise, and content vocabulary.
Writing – Is an integral part of learning across all content. Good form and content will be expected. Writing workshop format and writing for real purposes will be emphasized. Format, and writing strategies and styles will explicitly be taught within specific genres. Resources: Thinking Maps, Write From the Beginning, Write Source.
Mathematics Instruction
Accelerated one year as is consistent with the DVUSD SAGE program. Some students are
accelerated 2 years on a case by case basis. Students will be grouped by assessments according to readiness. Envisions intervention assessments and District math assessments are used in placement determination.
Science
Science will feature hands-on investigations, research, and problem-based learning.
Resources: Foss Science, curricular units from The College of William and Mary Center for Gifted Education,
McDougal Littell Science (course material in on-line medium), and internet resources.
Social Studies
Social Studies will feature problem-based learning units and may include some curricular units from College
of William and Mary Center for Gifted Education. Other resources include: DVUSD adopted curriculum, internet research and Renzulli projects, literature studies.
Technology and Differentiation
Technology and Differentiation will be included throughout the content and used as a productivity tool. Keyboarding
and word processing, PowerPoint, and Excel skills will be taught within the context of project work. Other technology will be used to facilitate creativity such as digital cameras, Movie Maker, drawing tools, etc.
